Practice Tips
For Students
1. Practice! Practice! Practice! The more you practice, the better you become and the more proud you can be of your accomplishments.
- Six days of practice is the best.
- Play each piece three times or more every day.
- Give tricky spots a little extra practice.
- Remember the goal is to learn your pieces well.
2. If you have a lot of after school activities that make it difficult to find time to practice, try:
- Practice small sections or just part of your lesson, rotating the pieces so that each piece gets adequate attention throughout the week.
- On less busy days, spend more time on each of your pieces.
3. Keep your fingernails trimmed neatly so that you can play with a good hand shape.
For Parents
1. Take an interest in your child’s lesson and the pieces they have. Have your child give you a weekly recital and be sure to praise their accomplishments. Make positive remarks about their pieces and let your child know which pieces are your favorites.
2. Help your child figure out a good practice time and help them to stick to it. If you plan extra events in an evening that conflict with their practice time, be sure to talk with your child ahead of time to figure out a good practice time for that day.
